  1. Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels.

  2. Loosen lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.

  3. Lift the vehicle at the proper jack points and support it securely on jack stands.

  5. Turn the steering wheel to improve access (front brakes).

  6. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap (optional) to make piston compression easier—watch fluid level so it doesn’t overflow.

  6. Clean and service the slide pins: pull them out, wipe clean, apply fresh brake grease, and reinstall. Sticking pins cause uneven pad wear.

  7. Install new hardware/clips (if included). Apply a thin layer of brake grease where pads contact the clips/bracket (metal-to-metal contact points only).

  8. Compress the caliper piston: use a C-clamp or piston tool to push the piston back slowly. (Rear calipers on some cars must be rotated/wound back.)

  9. Install the new pads in the bracket. Ensure they slide freely and sit flat.

  10. Reinstall the caliper over the new pads and rotor.

  11. Reinstall and tighten the slide bolts. Torque to spec if available.

  12. Repeat on the other side of the same axle (always replace pads in pairs).

After installation

  1. Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts.

  2. Lower the vehicle and torque lug nuts in a star pattern to spec.

  3. Pump the brake pedal slowly until it feels firm (this seats the pads against the rotor).

  4. Check brake fluid level and top off with the correct fluid if needed.

  5. Do a cautious test drive at low speed. Confirm normal braking and no unusual noises.

  6. Bed-in the pads if the manufacturer recommends it (often several moderate stops from 30–40 mph with cool-down time).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Letting the caliper hang by the brake hose

  • Getting grease on pad/rotor friction surfaces

  • Forgetting to pump the brake pedal before driving

  • Only replacing one side (always do both sides on the axle)
