How to Replace Your HVAC Air Filter (And Why It Matters)
Quick note: an air filter and a capacitor are two very different parts. The air filter is a routine maintenance item you can usually replace yourself. A capacitor is an electrical component (often in the outdoor unit) that can hold a dangerous charge and should be handled by a trained HVAC technician.
When should you replace the filter?
Every 1–3 months for most homes
More often if you have pets, allergies, construction dust, or run the system constantly
Step-by-step: replacing the air filter
Turn the system OFF at the thermostat.
Find the filter location: return grille (ceiling/wall) or the filter slot near the furnace/air handler.
Remove the old filter and note the size printed on the frame (example: 16x25x1).
Check airflow direction: look for the arrow on the filter frame and point it toward the blower (toward the unit).
Install the new filter, close the grille/slot, and turn the system back ON.
