How to Change Antifreeze in Your Car

Changing antifreeze—also called engine coolant—is important maintenance that helps protect your engine from overheating, freezing temperatures, and corrosion. With the correct coolant and careful preparation, many vehicle owners can complete a coolant change at home.

Before you begin

Check your owner’s manual for the correct coolant type, mixture, capacity, and service interval. Some vehicles require a specific formulation, and mixing incompatible coolants can damage the cooling system. If you are unsure, ask a qualified technician.

  • Correct antifreeze/coolant for your vehicle

  • Distilled water if a concentrate must be diluted

  • Drain pan large enough for the old coolant

Important safety warnings

Never open the radiator cap or coolant reservoir while the engine is hot. Hot coolant is pressurized and can cause severe burns. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, keep children and pets away, and clean spills immediately because antifreeze is poisonous.

Step 1: Let the engine cool completely

Park on a level surface, engage the parking brake, switch off the engine, and wait until the engine and radiator are completely cool. Remove the key and allow plenty of time if the vehicle was recently driven.

Step 2: Locate the cooling-system components

Identify the radiator cap, coolant expansion or overflow reservoir, radiator drain valve, and lower radiator hose. The exact locations vary by vehicle, so use the owner’s manual before removing anything.

Step 3: Position the drain pan

Place the drain pan beneath the radiator drain valve or lower hose. If you need to raise the vehicle, use approved ramps or jack stands on a stable surface—never rely on a jack alone.

Step 4: Drain the old coolant

With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap or reservoir cap slowly. Open the drain valve or carefully disconnect the lower radiator hose, allowing the old coolant to flow into the pan. Close the valve or reconnect the hose when draining is complete.

Step 5: Flush the system if recommended

Some vehicles and maintenance schedules call for a coolant flush. Follow the product and vehicle instructions. Do not use household chemicals or tap water unless the manufacturer specifically permits it, because minerals can promote deposits and corrosion.

Step 6: Add the correct coolant mixture

If using premixed coolant, pour it directly into the radiator or expansion tank as specified by the manual. If using concentrate, mix it with distilled water in the required ratio—commonly 50/50, but always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a funnel to prevent spills.

Step 7: Bleed air from the system

Air pockets can cause overheating. Start the engine only as directed by the owner’s manual, set the cabin heater to maximum, and use the vehicle’s bleed screw if equipped. Watch the coolant level and add fluid as needed. Stop immediately if the temperature rises abnormally or coolant leaks.

Step 8: Check for leaks and verify the level

When the engine has cooled again, check the radiator and reservoir level, hoses, drain valve, and hose connections. Inspect for leaks and confirm the level is between the marked minimum and maximum lines. Never overfill the reservoir.

Dispose of old antifreeze responsibly

Never pour antifreeze onto the ground, into a storm drain, or down a household drain. Keep it in a labeled, sealed container and contact a local auto-parts store, service center, or household hazardous-waste program about proper recycling or disposal.

  • The vehicle overheats, loses coolant, or has a persistent leak.
