How to Change Windshield Wipers on Your Car
Changing windshield wipers is a simple maintenance task that most vehicle owners can complete in a few minutes. Fresh wiper blades improve visibility in rain, snow, and road spray, helping you drive more safely.
When should you replace your wipers?
Replace wiper blades when they leave streaks, skip across the glass, chatter, smear water, or show cracked, split, or hardened rubber. Many drivers replace them about every 6 to 12 months, but heat, ice, sun, and frequent use can shorten their life.
What you will need
A replacement blade that matches your vehicle’s year, make, and model
Your owner’s manual or the package instructions
A clean towel or soft cloth

Step 1: Confirm the correct replacement blades
Check the owner’s manual, measure the existing blades, or use a vehicle-fit guide at an auto-parts store. The driver and passenger blades may be different lengths. If your vehicle has a rear wiper, check its size separately.
Step 2: Lift the wiper arm
Park on level ground, switch off the ignition, and place the wipers in their normal resting position. Carefully lift one wiper arm away from the windshield. Keep a firm grip on the arm and never force it.
Step 3: Protect the windshield
Place a folded towel on the glass beneath the blade. The uncovered metal arm can snap down and crack or scratch the windshield.
Step 4: Remove the old blade
Find the small locking tab or clip where the blade connects to the arm. Press or slide the release, then move the blade according to the connector design—often downward or toward the end of the arm. If it does not release easily, consult the instructions rather than twisting the arm.
Step 5: Attach the new blade
Align the new blade’s adapter with the wiper arm and slide it into place until the locking tab clicks. Gently pull on the blade to confirm it is secure. Repeat the process on the other front wiper and the rear wiper if needed.
Step 6: Test the installation
Lower each arm carefully onto the windshield. Add washer fluid and test the wipers briefly. Confirm that the blades move smoothly, remain attached, and clear water evenly without streaks or unusual noise.

Do not let an unprotected metal wiper arm fall onto the glass.
Do not drive until every blade is firmly locked in place.
Never use a damaged, bent, or loose wiper arm.
If the wipers still streak after replacement, clean the glass and inspect for a damaged windshield or arm.
